Nenad Lalovic, the chief of United World Wrestling (UWW), the global body for wrestling, stated that nothing could be done regarding Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Olympics in Paris. The Indian wrestler was eliminated from competition when she failed the weigh-in on Wednesday, which is a requirement for all wrestlers at the beginning of each match day. Only a few hours separated Vinesh from fighting USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt in the historic gold medal match for women’s 50 kg weightlifting. The 29-year-old would have been the first female wrestler from India to compete in the Olympic final, but she was disqualified from winning a medal because she was 100 grams over the allowed limit.
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had appealed the decision to disqualify Phogat to United World Wrestling, the world governing body of wrestling. “She weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning, despite the team’s best efforts throughout the night,” the IOA stated in a statement.
Vinesh Phogat’s exclusion was described as “very shocking” by IOA President PT Usha, who also stated that the team was offering Phogat “all medical and emotional support”.
But UWW CEO Lalovic dashed all dreams. He told Indian reporters in Paris, “I have nothing against that (India’s appeal), but I know the outcome.” There is nothing that I can think of to do. I just don’t think it is conceivable (to overturn the decision),” he continued. “It is the competition’s rules.”
Lalovic brought attention to the international wrestling regulation, which states that if a wrestler fails the weigh-in, they are automatically eliminated from the competition. “We must abide with the regulations. The Rules are what they are. I’m very sorry about her. Her excess weight was very slightly overestimated. Every athlete is present for the public weigh-in procedure. Someone who doesn’t pass the weigh-in cannot be allowed to participate,” he explained.
‘Impossible to give Vinesh silver’
The head of the wrestling board responded that it was “impossible” to consider Vinesh for the silver medal since the regulations do not permit it, even if she had won all of her bouts and made it to the finals by passing the weigh-in on Tuesday.
Giving her the medal because she made it to the final is impossible. Everything is shifting because of the brackets. Besides, regulations are regulations. Everyone who visits the continues is aware that they will be weighed again the following day.
Lalovic also quashed the possibility of a relaxation in Vinesh’s case as the Indian was only 100gm overweight. “If we allow this 100 gm, there will be a request for another 100 gms,” he said.Lalovic also quashed the possibility of a relaxation in Vinesh’s case as the Indian was only 100gm overweight. “If we allow this 100 gm, there will be a request for another 100 gms,” he said.
