TATA IPL 2024: KKR Defeats MI by 18 Runs, First to Enter Playoffs with Stellar Bowling
In a 16-over encounter at Eden Gardens that was cut short by rain, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Mumbai Indians by 18 runs despite Ishan Kishan scoring a fast 40 off 22 balls. An outstanding bowling effort, especially from Kolkata Knight Riders’ spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, was a major factor in the victory.
Thanks to the combination of Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai Indians were able to cruise at 65 without losing, but the KKR spinners pulled off a remarkable recovery. They kept their lines in check and made good use of speed changes on a surface that offered bounce and grip.
They were asked to bat first by the Mumbai Indians, but they recovered from a precarious 40/3 thanks to 21-ball 42 by Venkatesh Iyer and 23-ball 33 by Nitish Rana. Chakravarthy (2-17), Harshit Rana (2-34) and Andre Russell (2-34) bowled brilliantly to check the Mumbai Indians progress and restrict them to 139/8. As KKR reached a formidable 157/7, Andre Russell (14-ball 24) and Rinku Singh (20 off 12) delivered some powerful shots near the end.
By the end of the Power-play, KKR appeared to be in trouble once more as Ishan Kishan was playing well before Sunil and Varun Chakravarthy put the brakes on. The Mumbai Indians suffered their ninth loss in 13 games this season. They play the Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede on May 17 to cap off their campaign.
Mumbai got off to a great start as they attempted to chase a challenging mark of 158 in 16 overs, with Ishan Kishan smashing a 22-ball 40 that included five boundaries and two sixes. Despite Rohit Sharma’s slow start as an Impact Substitute, Kishan’s outstanding batting made sure that the five-time champions finished the five-over Power-play at 59 for no loss.
Switch-hitting Sunil Narine for a boundary and a six off consecutive deliveries, Kishan completed the Power-play after hitting consecutive fours and then hitting a six off the last ball of the fourth over, which was bowled by Harshit Rana. When Narine outwitted Kishan with a quicker carrom ball and the hitter shot it straight to Ramandeep Singh, KKR made a big breakthrough.
After struggling to 19 off 24 balls, Rohit Sharma gave Narine an easy catch off Chakravarthy. Suryakumar Yadav, who a few days prior had made an incredible century without losing at the Wankhede, was out cheaply, finishing at 11 off 15 balls before attempting to hit Andre Russell from well outside the off-stump to the leg side and getting caught.
Tilak Varma smashed Harshit Rana for a four and six in consecutive deliveries, followed by another boundary with a reverse hit. However, Mumbai’s momentum was halted when Nehal Wadhera was run out while attempting a second run off the last ball, leaving them requiring 41 runs from 12 balls. Naman Dhir then showcased his power hitting by striking two sixes and a four off just four deliveries against Russell. Moreover, when Phil Salt dropped a catch off the last ball of the over, Mumbai Indians capitalized, scoring 18 runs in the 14th over.
Requiring 22 runs from the final six balls, Naman Dhir attempted to clear the boundary off Rana’s delivery but mistimed the shot, resulting in an easy catch for Rinku Singh at deep midwicket. Dhir departed after scoring 17 off six deliveries. Shortly after, Rana’s delivery surprised Tilak Varma with extra bounce, causing his attempted shot over point to end up in the hands of keeper Salt.
